Cyanotypien über's Nähen

Letzten Monat habe ich neue Cyanotypien gemacht. Zwei Serien sind daraus entstanden: Zum einen habe ich angefangen, Arbeitsmaterialien, die ich zum Nähen gebrauche, zu arrangieren und daraus Bilder zu machen. Zum anderen habe ich meine "Cyanori"-Technik weiterentwickelt (ja, ich nenne es immer noch so...)

Für die erste Serie begann ich mit Scheren und anderem Schneidwerkzeug. Danach benutzte ich auch Spulen und Massbänder, legte eine Ansammlung von Knöpfen und anderen Schliessen aus. Zuletzt belichtete ich noch Einzelteile meiner Nähmaschine (das brauchte die meisten Versuche, bis ich zufrieden war).

Zwei entwickelte Cyanotypien beim Trocknen:

Bei den Cyanoribildern fing ich zuerst wieder an, mit Vorstichen durch den Stoff zu nähen und sie nach Gefühl zusammenzuraffen. Das gab zwar zwei schöne Bilder, das Resultat ist so aber generell schwierig zu kontrollieren, da sich der Stoff garantiert nie so faltet, wie man es gerne hätte.

Ich kam dann auf die Smok-Technik. Dabei wird der Stoff auch durch zusammenziehen gemustert. Anders als bei mir werden aber in regelmässigen Abständen Rückstiche gemacht, damit die Falten genau an Ort und Stelle bleiben. Gewöhnlich wird dafür zuerst ein Raster auf den Stoff gezeichnet, damit man weiss, wo sticken. Und gewöhnlich werden die Falten natürlich nicht wieder aufgemacht. Sehr hilfreich fand ich die Videos von Azalia Designs. Dort werden verschiedene Grundformen aufgeführt und erklärt. Ich probierte einige davon aus und schaute, wie sie wirkten. Eine faszinierende Technik, mit der man noch viel experimentieren könnte!

Als Stoff benutzte ich wieder beschichtete Leintücher, wie in meinen ersten Cyanotypie-Versuchen. Diese sind fein gewebt und trotzdem robust. Das war wichtig, da ich die Bilder am Schluss auf Keilrahmen spannte. Ursprünglich wollte ich an dieser Stelle Schritt für Schritt zeigen, wie ich dabei vorgegangen bin. Es war dann aber viel einfach "Try and error", vor allem bei den Ecken, so dass ich nicht viel Hilfreiches dazu sagen kann.

Das Beste ist aber, dass ich die Bilder im Stoffladen Alja in Luzern zeigen darf. Ich freue mich sehr, dass das möglich war! Hoffentlich spricht es die Leute an. Und wenn ihr in den nächsten paar Wochen grad sowieso in Luzern seid, könnt ihr ja mal vorbeischauen...

Last month I made several new cyanotypes. I made two series of pictures: One where I arranged materials and tools I use for sewing. And one where I worked further on my "Cyanori"-technique (yes, I'm still calling it like that...)

I began the first series with arranging scissors and other tools for cutting. Then I proceeded to spools and measuring tape and laid out different buttons and other closures. Finally I took out the different parts of my sewing machine and exposed those (that last one took me the longest until I was happy with the result).

For the Cyanori pictures I started with doing a running stitch and then gathering the fabric. This lead to two nice images, but ultimately the results where just to hard to control like that. The pleats would just never be like I wanted them to.

Then I got the idea to use smocking. With this technique you also create a pattern by gathering the fabric. But here the folds are stabilized by regular backstitches to keep the folds in place. Usually you first draw a grid onto the fabric to know where to stitch. And of course, usually the stitches remain. I found Azalia Designs videos very useful. She shows and explains a wide variety of standard smocking patterns. So I could just look them up and try some of them out. It's a fascinating technique with a lot of possibilities for experimenting.

Like in my first cyanotype attempts I used linen sheets. They are finely woven but at the same time robust. This was important as I would stretch the pictures over a wooden frame. I had actually planned to give a step-by-step turorial for this, but a lot of it was just "try and error", especially when it came to getting the corners straight, so I haven't got a lot of helpful tips on that.

But the best part is that I can show those pictures at the Alja fabric shop in Lucerne. I am very happy that this is possible! I hope the customers will enjoy my pictures. And who knows, if you happen to be in Lucerne the next few weeks, you could go and have a look for yourself...

Secondhand aus Stockholm

Hallo zusammen
So, zurück aus den Ferien! Diesen Sommer waren wir in Schweden. Zwei Wochen waren wir zu Fuss und mit Zelt unterwegs. Das war sehr eindrücklich. Weil es aber etwas gar weit entfernt ist von den eigentlichen (zugegeben auch schon sehr weitläufigen) Themen dieses Blogs, schreibe ich zu diesem Teil der Reise gar nichts Weiteres sondern belasse es bei einem Bild:

Gegen Ferienende waren wir noch eine Woche in Stockholm. Mehrstöckige Häuser! Menschenmassen! Restaurants! Shops! Krimskrams! Nach einer gewissen Umstellungszeit (die einen Gaskocher und eine Bushaltestelle beinhaltete) erfreuten wir uns wieder an den Annehmlichkeiten der Zivilisation und gingen auf Einkaufsbummel. Wir waren vor allem auf der Insel Södermalm (im Süden Stockholms) unterwegs. In dieser Gegend hat es sehr viele Läden für Kleider, die Vintage sind oder zumindest so aussehen. Da ich mir aber komisch vorkomme, wenn ich Läden empfehle, in denen ich gar nichts gekauft habe, zeige ich euch einfach meine Funde, die ich daheim gleich anziehen und fotografieren musste und sage euch, wo ich sie her habe.

Den Taillen-Gürtel habe ich von "Modern Retro", einem Laden in der Wollmar Yxkullsgatan 9.

Das Sommerkleid stammt von "Beyond Retro" in der Brännkyrkagatan 82 (ob es Zufall ist, dass die beiden Läden so ähnliche Namen haben?) Dieser Laden überforderte mich komplett, denn wir kamen 15 Minuten vor Ladenschluss dort an und er war riesig! (Tatsächlich handelt es sich bei "Beyond Retro" um eine ganze Ladenkette, die ihren Ursprung in London hatte, wie ich später herausfand) Man hätte sich stundenlang durch all diese Kleider wühlen können. So gesehen habe ich dieses Kleid schon eher auf's Geratewohl ausgewählt. Aber ich mag es sehr, vor allem den Ausschnitt und die Schnürung am Rücken.

Der Science Fiction Buchladen in Gamla Stan. Ein riesiger Laden, nur für Dinge rund um Science Fiction und Fantasy! Sie schienen alles zu haben: Klassiker, Comics, Filme, Brettspiele, Sekundärliteratur, Merchandise, S/F-Bastelbücher. Wir kauften Einhorn-Fleisch für einen Freund.

Hello there
I'm back from the holidays! This summer we were in Sweden. We went hiking in the Fjäll for two weeks. It was very impressive but as it is a little bit off-topic I won't write much more about it but just show you a picture instead.

Towards the end we stayed in Stockholm for a week. Multistoreyed houses! Masses of people! Restaurants! Shops! Bits and pieces! After a certain time of acclimatisation (which included a camping stove and a bus stop) we enjoyed the comforts of civilisation again. Like shopping! We mainly stayed on the island Södermalm in the southern part of Stockholm. There you can find many shops that sell vintage (looking) clothes. I feel strange recommending stores where I didn't actually buy anything, so I thought I just show you the things I purchased and where I found them.

I got the summer dress from "Beyond Retro" in Brännkyrkagatan 82 (Is it only by chance that those shops have such similar names?) I was completely helpless when I entered this store because it was 15 minutes before closing and the store was so huge! (I later found out that "Beyond Retro" is actually a chain store with origins in London) I could have stayed there for hours. So my final pick was actually quite random, but I like it a lot, especially because of the neckline.

Finally: Other great things we found in Stockholm:
The Science Fiction Bookstore in Gamla Stan. Such a big store, only for science fiction and fantasy based things! It seemed to have everything: classics, comics, films, board games, secondary literature, merchandise, S/F-based crafting books (most them in English, luckily). We bought unicorn meat for a friend.

An exhibition about the history of video games, where you could, well, play all the video games! I totally defeated my boyfriend in "Space Wars", but didn't have a chance in "Street Fighter".

Barcelona

Die letzten paar Tage reiste ich mit meiner Mutter nach Barcelona. Wir hatten diese Reise schon seit Ewigkeiten geplant und endlich hat es geklappt. Obwohl wir nur wenige Tage dort waren, habe ich natürlich viel mehr Bilder gemacht, als ich euch zumuten möchte. Da sich dieser Blog unter anderem mit Zeitreisen und schönen Dingen beschäftigt, zeige ich euch vor allem Bilder über die katalanische Variante des Jugendstils, den "Modernisme".

Der bekannteste Architekt des Modernisme war Antoni Gaudí, der unter anderem die Kirche Sagrada Família baute. Oder zumindest teilweise, denn es wird immer noch daran gebaut. (Es gibt einen sehr kurzen, sehr treffenden Stop-Motion-Film über die Geschichte dazu: Film) Erst seit 2010 hat die Kirche z.B. ein Dach. Und seit dem können die Leute auch im klassischen Sinn hineingehen. Und wo man hineingehen kann, kann man Eintritt verlangen. Und anstehen. An die zwei Stunden. Waren wir wirklich wahnsinnig genug, uns das anzutun? Und ob! Und es hat sich doch gelohnt, denn etwas Ähnliches habe ich noch nie gesehen.

Und das Anstehen war auch nicht so schlimm, denn ich beschäftigte mich damit, Abriebe des Bodens und allerlei anderer Sachen rund um die Kirche zu machen. Die verschiedenen Bodenplatten, die über die ganze Stadt verteilt sind, kommen wie der Modernisme aus der Zeit anfangs 20. Jahrhundert. 

Genau wie das Casa Milà, das ebenfalls von Gaudí ist. Bei schönem Wetter hat man eine tolle Aussicht über das Quartier und es gibt eine kleine Ausstellung, wie die (wohlhabenden) Leute um diese Zeit gelebt haben.

Am beeindruckendsten fand ich aber die Häuserfassaden. Sie haben so viele verschiedene kleine Details! Man könnte stundenlang durch die Strassen gehen und alle Leute anrempeln, weil man nur noch zu den Häusern hinauf schaut. Die kleinen Balkone gäben ein gutes Motiv ab für einen Stoffdruck. *auf to-do-Liste-setz*

Und wisst ihr was? Barcelona hat auch einen kleinen Lolita-Laden. Er heisst "Madame Chocolat" und befindet sich an der Passeig de Sant Joan 7. Obwohl er etwas abseits der Sehenswürdigkeiten ist, ist er gut erreichbar und leicht zu finden. Es gibt verschiedene Brands, neu und Secondhand,  aber auch ein paar eigene Sachen. Ich habe mir eine Bluse von Infanta und diese Strumpfhosen von Madame Chocolat selbst gekauft. Sind sie nicht toll? Ich habe Dracula entdeckt, ich frage mich, wer die anderen Leute sind.

My dears

The last few days I was in Barcelona with my mother. We had planned this trip for ages and finally we managed to go. We had only little time but of course I made far more pictures than I dare showing you. So since this blog is dedicated to time traveling and beautiful things amongst others, I will try to focus on the Catalan variety of art nouveau, the "modernisme".

One of the most famous architects was Antoni Gaudí, who built the church Sagrada Família. Well, more or less, because they're still on it. (There's a funny short stop-motion-film about the history of the building here: Film). It's only since 2010 that the church has a roof. And since then, people can really go inside. And where people want to go inside, you can make them pay for the entrance. And queue. For about two hours. Did we really commit the folly to do that? Hell yeah! And in the end it was worth it, because I have never seen something alike.

And waiting wasn't that bad, because I kept myself busy making frottages of the pavement and other things around the church. The different pavement tiles you can see all over the city are, like modernisme in general, also from the beginning of the 20. century.

Just like Casa Milà, which is from Gaudí as well. When the weather is fine you have a lovely view of the streets nearby and there is a small exhibition about (rich) peoples' life during that time.

But what I found most impressing where the different facades. They all have so many different little details! I could walk around for hours, running into other people because I'd always just look up. The small balconies would make lovely prints *writing on to-do list*

And guess what? There's a small Lolita-shop in Barcelona. It's called "Madame Chocolat" and it's situated in Passeig de Sant Joan 7. Although it's not near any sight you can reach and find it easily. They sell different brands, new and second hand and some self-made things as well. I bought a blouse from Infanta and tights from Madame Chocolat herself. Aren't they just great? I spotted Dracula on one of the pictures, I wonder who the other persons are.
