Ein Tisch aus Karton

Es war einmal vor nicht so langer Zeit, da bin ich umgezogen. Und wie das so ist mit dem Umziehen, kauft man neue Möbel und bekommt viel Karton. Da es meine erste eigene Wohnung war und ich alles richtig machen wollte, trennte ich diesen Abfall ganz korrekt und brachte das Meiste davon zur Müllabfuhr. Sehr zum Entsetzen vieler Leute, die noch nie eine Kartonschachtel gesehen hatten, die so gross war, dass ein Sofa darin Platz hatte. Irgendetwas, so begann ich zu spüren, hatte ich falsch gemacht. Wie es der Zufall wollte, merkte ich etwa zur gleichen Zeit, dass ich gut ein Tischchen gebrauchen könnte, das genau in eine bestimmte Ecke passen sollte wo sonst überhaupt kein Möbel Platz hatte. Also besorgte ich von einer lieben Person ganz viel Wellkarton und begann, daraus ein Tischchen zu basteln, damit ich es in die Ecke stellen konnte, und um für die grosse Kartonschachtel geradezustehen, die ich weggeschmissen hatte.

Man schneidet aus Karton mehrere Streben zu, die man ineinandersteckt, mit Klebband verstärkt und mit einer Aussenwand verkleidet. Danach macht man das Ganze mit Papier und Kleister noch stabiler und malt es am Ende an. Ich schaffte es nicht, das Papier ganz klein zu kriegen, wodurch die Oberfläche gröber wurde als beabsichtigt.

Designtechnisch könnte man es wohl unter "netter Versuch" einordnen: Das Möbel ist unbeabsichtigt krumm, eher zweckmässig als elegant und der Aufwand ist unverhältnismässig hoch. Die Idee "Möbel aus Karton" liesse sich aber in verschiedene Richtungen weiterdenken: Mir gefiel es am besten, als es noch nicht fertig und noch nicht als Möbel zu gebrauchen war: Als es nur aus Karton bestand und sehr leicht daherkam, als es mit Pappmaché überzogen war und aussah, als hätte ein postapokalyptisches Monster es vollgerotzt oder als es weiss grundiert war und aussah, als wäre es aus Gips und überhaupt nicht belastbar. Die Idee, Möbel komplett aus Abfall herzustellen, ist wunderbar. Die Herstellung müsste dann aber noch viel einfacher sein. Auch hat man mit Karton ganz andere Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten als mit Holz, z.B. mit versetzten Steckverbindungen. Verständlicherweise wollte ich es am Anfang aber möglichst einfach halten. Vielleicht habt ihr ja Ideen. Würdet ihr so ein Möbel selbst machen wollen oder Kartonmöbel kaufen?

Once upon a short time I moved into my new home, buying new furniture and getting a lot of cardboard boxes in return. As it was my first own flat I wanted to do it all correctly and recycled most of the boxes. This horrified some people who had newer seen such big boxes, cardboard boxes so big they could contain a sofa. I realized I had done something wrong. At the same time I felt that I could use a small table to put it in a corner where all other furniture would be to large. So I went to a nice person to get a whole lot of corrugated cardboard and I started to make a table out of it, to put it in that corner and to make amends for the boxes I threw away.

You cut single pieces out of the carton and fit them together, secure them with tape and cover the grid with more carton. Then fortify the whole thing with paper and glue (papier mâché) and paint it in any colour you like. I didn't manage to make the paper pieces as small as they were supposed to be, that's why the surface is knobbly.

Designwise you could call it a nice try: The table legs are awry, the look is rather simple and the amount of work is too high. But the whole idea of making furniture out of cardboard could go further still: For example, I liked my small table the best before it was finished, before it could be used as an actual piece of furniture: In the beginning when it was all just carton and very light. When it was covered with papier mâché and looked like snot from an postapocalyptic monster. Or when it was painted in white and looked like plaster, too fragile to sit on. The whole idea of furniture made of rubbish is beautiful. But then the making-process would need to be much faster and easier. Carton offers other looks and principles of designing than wood, too, for example with irregular joints. But for the beginning I just wanted it to be as simple as possible. What do you think?
