Die Fantasy Basel steht wieder vor der Tür und das bedeutet: Zeit für ein neues Cosplay.
Dieses Jahr gehe ich als Dolores.

Dolores ist ein Roboter. Sie lebt im Vergnügungspark "Westworld", wo Touristen hinkommen, um Wildwestabenteuer nachzuspielen. Und da man Roboter ja reparieren kann und Erinnerungen löschbar sind, ist es auch nicht verwerflich, wenn die Parkbesucher nicht gerade rücksichtsvoll mit den Robotern umgehen. Dolores sieht weiterhin das Gute in der Welt und tut keiner Fliege etwas zuleide. Zumindest zu Beginn...

Das Kleid dieses Jahr war eine Herausforderung, denn im Gegensatz zu Princess Bubblegum und Susanne, die ja viel Spielraum für Interpretation lassen, hat Dolores das Aussehen einer bestimmten Schauspielerin (Evan Rachel Wood, der ich nicht ähnlich sehe) und es gibt viele hochauflösende Bilder, wo man bis aufs Unterhemd ganz genau sehen kann, wie der Stoff und der Schnitt und die ganzen Verzierungen auszusehen haben. Natürlich musste ich hier und da Kompromisse machen. Im Grossen und Ganzen glaube ich aber, dass ich mich recht gut ans "Original" gehalten habe.

Schnitt
Die Zeit des Wilden Westens ist das 19. Jahrhundert, und Dolores' Kleid ist in einigen Dingen typisch für die Mode zu der Zeit: Der Rock ist bodenlang und vor allem hinten weit, das Oberteil ist figurbetont, die Ärmelnähte sind nicht unten, sondern an den Seiten. Ich konnte darum meine Belle Epoque-Schnittmuster wieder hervorholen, musste aber natürlich auch einige Dinge ändern.
So ist der Rock hinten in regelmässigen Abständen gefaltet statt nur gerüscht. Das Oberteil wird vorne durch Knöpfe geschlossen statt am Rücken mit Haken und Ösen. Es dauerte ein Weilchen, bis ich das Schnittmuster gut angepasst hatte! Ich denke aber, jetzt sitzt es gut. Auch dank vielen versteckten Druckknöpfen...





Borte
Das Schönste an Dolores' Kleid finde ich die Verzierungen an Ärmeln und Ausschnitt. Bei näherem Hinsehen ist die Borte gepunktet. Da ein Polkadot-Print aber zu modern ausgesehen hätte, bestickte ich ein Baumwollstück von Hand. Danach musste ich den Stoff falten und annähen.
Ganz innen verläuft ein Samtband. Ich fand kein Band in der richtigen Farbe, weshalb ich ein hellblaues Band mit verdünnter Textilfarbe einpinselte. Ich bin nicht sicher, wie lange das hält, aber so sieht die Farbe weniger künstlich aus.

Knöpfe
Auf der Vorderseite habe ich normale Knopflöcher genäht. Bei den Ärmeln liegen die Knöpfe jedoch neben dem Stoffrand. Darum nähte ich dort einen Wollfaden an den Stoffrand und häkelte Schlaufen, wo die Knöpfe durchgehen.

Zwischen den einzelnen Schlaufen ist der Wollfaden einfach mit Vorstichen angenäht.

Gürtel
Dolores hat einen sehr auffälligen Gürtel mit einem geprägten Blütenmuster und einer metallenen Schnalle. Westerngürtel mit ähnlichem Muster findet man viele, aber sie werden natürlich eher um die Hüfte getragen als um die Taille und haben andere Schnallen. Ausserdem sind schöne Gürtel nicht gerade billig! Glücklicherweise bin ich aber nicht die erste in meiner Familie, die sich gerne anzieht wie in früheren Zeiten. Ja, während ich mich gerne an Mittelaltermärkten und Conventions herumtreibe, bevorzugte mein Onkel Cowboystiefel und -Hüte. Und glücklicherweise hatte ich noch einen Gürtel von ihm. Zuerst dachte ich, ich könne ihn nicht gebrauchen, da er einen ganz anderen Verschluss hat als Dolores' Gürtel. Nach einigem Zögern machte ich aber einfach ein Loch in den Gürtel und zog eine rein dekorative Gürtelschnalle von Prym ein. Der eigentliche Verschluss ist jetzt am Rücken.
Nun war der Gürtel aber immer noch zu gross für meine Taille. Weil der Verschluss etwas speziell ist, konnte ich nicht einfach zusätzliche Löcher stanzen, sondern musste den Verschluss versetzen. Hier hatte ich Hilfe von Peregrinas, die mir erklärten, was ich für die Lederbearbeitung brauche: Sattlergarn und eine Ahle. Also nahm ich den Verschluss ab und nähte ihn weiter hinten wieder an.
Es bereitete mir schon einige Gewissensbisse, einfach den schönen alten Gürtel für ein Kostüm derart abzuändern. Aber schliesslich war die Gelegenheit zu gut, um sie nicht zu nutzen.

Das Kleid steht also. Nun wäre ein Unterrock noch toll und auch Dominiks Cosplay ist noch nicht ganz fertig. Die grösste Herausforderung aber wird sein, aus dunkeläugig und braunhaarig blond und  blauäugig zu machen. Die Perücke, die ich gekauft habe, sieht schonmal grossartig aus... Zu grossartig: Niemand, der in der Prärie lebt, kann so volle und glänzende Haare haben! Ihr seht ja dann, wie es herauskommt...

Hello my dears

This weekend is Fantasy Basel again! This means: high time for a new cosplay!
This year I will be going as Dolores. Dolores is a robot. She lives in the theme park "Westworld", where tourists go to take part in wild west adventures. And since robots can be repared and memories can be erased it's no problem when the visitors treat the robots in a more than careless manner, right? Dolores continues to see only the good in the world and can't hurt a fly. At least in the beginning...

This year's cosplay was a challenge because unlike Princess Bubblegum and Susan, who leave a lot of room for interpretation, the character of Dolores is connected with look of the actress playing her (Evan Rachel Wood, and no, I don't look anything like her). And of course there are many pictures where you can see exactly what the dress is supposed to look like, every seam and decoration, from the top to the undershirt... Of course I had to make compromises here and there. But all in all I think I managed to stay faithful to the "original".

Pattern
The "wild west" takes place in the 19th century and Dolores' dress is in many aspects typical for this periods fashion: The skirt has floor lenght and is wide especially at the back, the top is fitted and the sleeve seams are on the sides. That's why I could re-use my Belle Epoque pattern, although I had to make some changes of course.
The skirt for example isn't just gathered but folded in regular intervals. The blouse is closed at the front by buttons instead of at the back with hooks and eyes. It took me a while to adjust the pattern, but I think it fits well now. With the help of lots of press-buttons...

Border
I think the most beautiful detail of Dolores' dress are the laces on the sleeves and neckline. The folded border is dotted. Of course a polka dot print would have been too modern, so I embroidered a piece of fabric by hand. Then I had to fold and attach the border. There's also a velvet ribbon. I didn't find one in the right colour, so I bought a babyblue ribbon and painted diluted textile paint on it so it would look more natural. I hope it will stay on.

Buttons
On the front side I sewed regular buttonholes with the machine. But at the sleeves, the buttons are supposed to be next to the edge. So I attached a wool thread at the edges and crocheted loops for the buttons.

Belt
Dolores wears a eye-catching belt with a embossed floral pattern and a metal buckle. I found many western style belts with similar floral patterns, but they are worn on the hips rather than around the waist. The buckles look different too. And of course good belts are expensive! But luckily I'm not the first of our family to enjoy dressing up in old fashioned garments. Because while I like to hang around at conventions and medieval fairs my uncle used to prefer cowboy hats and -boots. And luckily again, I still had one of his belts. First I didn't think I could use it because the fastening looks completely different than what I needed. But after some hesitation I just added a purely decorative buckle from Prym. The real fastening is at the back now.
But the belt was still too wide for my waist. I couldn't just make additional holes into the belt because  of the peculiar fastening mechanic. So I had to detach one part of the belt and sew it on again at a different place. I had never sewn leather before. Thankfully, Peregrinas helped me out here as they explained what materials I would have to use: waxed thread and an awl.
I did feel a bit uneasy about changing that old belt so much for a costume. But then, I feel like it would have been a pity not to use it.

So, the dress is ready. An underskirt would be nice if time allows it but Dominiks cosplay isn't all done yet either. But I think the biggest difficulty will be to change my brown hair and dark eyes into blonde hair and blue eyes. I already have a wig and it looks great. Too great... Because no one living in the prairie could have such full shiny hair! Well, you'll see how it will turn out soon...
