Wintermantel im Frühling

Was? Schon wieder Sommerzeit? Aber... mein Wintermantel! Ja, ich bin wieder spät dran und ja, ich bin selber Schuld. Denn der Stoff lag schon seit Wochen Monaten gewaschen bereit, aber ich liess ihn liegen. In der Tat wäre das wohl noch bis nächsten Winter so weitergegangen, wenn mir nicht eine gute Freundin so etwas gesagt hätte wie "Weisst du, dein Mantel, der war ja mal schön, aber jetzt sieht er schon langsam ziemlich *?&!+-* aus". Echte Freunde erkennt man daran, dass sie einen zur rechten Zeit in den Hintern treten. Ach ja. Also machte ich mich an die Arbeit.

Und dies ist der Mantel des Anstosses. Auf dem Foto nicht zu erkennen sind die Löcher, die ich mir schon lange mal vorgenommen hatte zu flicken und die Fäden, die überall aus dem Stoff heraushängen. Auch wenn ich den Mantel mochte, fand ich es immer schade, dass er zu schmal geschnitten ist, um einen weiten Rock darunter zu tragen. Ein Grund mehr für einen neuen Mantel!

Ein Grund, wieso ich so lange zögerte, war, dass ich kein passendes Schnittmuster fand und Schiss hatte, ein eigenes zu zeichnen. Schliesslich nahm ich meinen alten Mantel als Ausgangslage, verbreiterte aber die einzelnen Teile gegen unten hin. Ausserdem war mir dieser Mantel etwas zu gross, deshalb verkleinerte ich den oberen Teil.

Ich wollte den Mantel für's erste recht schlicht machen, deshalb verzichtete ich auf Rüschen oder Spitzen. Dafür nähte ich Biesen. Ich fand es toll, wie der Wollstoff sich durch die Nähte verformte. Ich hatte ich mir so gar nicht vorstellen können, dass sich der Teil vor der Naht derart aufstellen und der Rest so flach bleiben würde.

Das Resultat finde ich "gar nicht mal so übel für meinen ersten Mantel, ABER...":

Die Ärmel sind eine Kleinigkeit zu kurz, aber ich glaube, es fällt nicht gross auf. Der Stoff hat an einigen Stellen Ausbuchtungen und liegt nicht ganz flach an. Ich nehme an, dass das z.T. mit den Biesen zu tun hat, die den Stoff etwas verziehen. Ausserdem fiel der Stoff viel schöner, bevor ich den Saum nähte. Während dem arbeiten machte ich mehrere Denkfehler, so dass ich den Saum nicht mehr einfach umfalten konnte. Also behalf ich mir mit Schrägband, um den Saum doch noch möglichst leicht hinzukriegen. Aber trotzdem wurde der Saum relativ steif. Für Tipps zur Verbesserung bin ich übrigens dankbar!

Recht zufrieden bin ich aber mit dem Kragen. Er lässt sich schön umklappen und hat eine gute Form. Ich hatte dieses Detail einfach von meinem "Vorlage-Mantel" übernommen, obwohl ich es anfangs nicht ganz durchschaute. Nun bin ich froh darüber :-)

Ich bin sehr glücklich über die Knöpfe, die ich vor einiger Zeit in einem Brocki gekauft und die ich nun endlich hervornehmen konnte. Anfangs war ich nicht ganz sicher, ob die Messingfarbe zum schwarz-weissen Futterstoff passt, aber zumindest die Muster sind sich sehr ähnlich.

Und was wird nun aus dem alten Mantel? Verschieben wir diese Frage doch auf eine anderer Jahreszeit, nicht?

What? It's summertime again? But... My winter coat! Yes, I'm late again and yes, it's my own fault. Because the fabric was there for weeks months, washed and ready, but I kept ignoring it. Indeed, i probably would have waited until next winter, if I hadn't met a friend of mine recently. She said something like "You know, your coat used to be really pretty, but now it looks quite *?&!+-*". Ah well. You know someone is a real friend when she kicks your buns just in time. So I started working.

On the first picture you can see the aforementioned coat. (However, you can't see the holes and threads hanging out of the fabric). Although I liked this coat I always thought it was a pity that it had a very straight cut, making it impossible to wear a wide skirt under it. Another reason for a new coat!

One reason why it took me so long was the fact that I couldn't find a good pattern and I was afraid to draw one myself. In the end I used my coat as a starting point, but I made a wider hem and shortened everything else (the coat was always a slightly too big for me).
I aimed at a relatively plain look, so I didn't use any ruffles or lace. I sewed pin-tucks along the sides, however. I really like how the wool fabric changes through the seams. I didn't foresee how it would stand out on one side and remain flat on the other side.

In conclusion, the result is quite "not-so-bad-for-my-first-coat-but..."
The sleeves are a trifle too short, but I think that's not very noticeable. The fabric has some dents, maybe because the pin-tucks slightly distort the fabric. And the fabric had a smoother fall before I sewed the hem. I made some mistake while working so I couldn't just fold it over. The best way out seemed to use a bias binding, so the hem would be as light as possible. But the it is still quite stiff. If you have any suggestions how I can improve this, i'd be glad!

I'm quite content with the collar. It folds easily and has a nice shape. I adopted this detail from my old coat without really understanding it in the beginning. Now I'm happy I made this :-)
And I'm very pleased with the buttons. I found them in a thrift-store some time ago and now I could finally use them. Initially I wasn't too sure if the brass and black-and-white of the lining would match, but the pattern is very similar.

And what happens with the old coat now? I think I'll delay this question until next season.
